Chapter Six

They sprang into action, and suddenly there were more men surrounding her. Sydney looked at each face, recognizing most from her days with Rob despite all the gear that had been dropped in for her to use. She looked like one of them, and having the right tools made all the difference in fighting the blaze.

“Hey, it’s a new recruit!” The tall, muscled, tattooed guy named Jackson sauntered up to her, and before she could open her mouth to greet him, he wrapped his arms around her and tugged her off her feet. Her boots dangled in the air, and she laughed.

From behind she heard a low rumble that could only be Maddox’s growl. She’d heard it a lot lately.

“She’s got work to do. Put her down,” Maddox ordered.

She didn’t need to look at his face to know he was glaring—his voice said it all.

Jackson issued a bark of laughter and set her on the ground, but not before he pecked her on the cheek. “It’s good to see you, Sydney. You’ve been hanging with these guys? My crew could show you more.”

Long fingers wrapped around her forearm. Maddox.

“She’s fine where she’s at. C’mon, we’re stretching out, and I want to keep you by me.” As Maddox hauled her away from Jackson, she threw an eye roll over her shoulder.

When she turned forward again, she removed her arm from his grasp. “I’m a big girl—I can walk.”

The noise he made in the back of his throat sent a ripple of excitement through her core. It also irritated the hell out of her.

“I can talk to anyone I like, you know. These are my friends.”

His eyes were a shade darker when he leveled her in his gaze. “You’re with me.”

She opened her mouth to ask if he meant she was to work by his side or something more, when shouts sounded. Forgetting her personal drama, she got into the line to help stop this fire.

While guys cut trees and brush, she dragged it across an open area about ten feet wide and built up the wood bits to create a barrier that was a controlled burn.

Smoke clogged the air and made her eyes burn despite her goggles. Sweat ran off her as she worked. Focused solely on her task, she had no sense of time. When she finally looked up at the sound of shouting, shock ripped through her. A wall of fire was barreling down on them.

“Sydney!” someone called, and she rushed in his direction, leaping a pile of freshly cut branches. The sharp tang of sap reached her even with the more acrid scent of smoke.

When she crowded together with the group of men, she looked at their faces. Maddox wasn’t here.

Where was he? A dark snake of panic slithered through her, making her legs feel as if they’d vanished and her body was floating.

“Maddox?” she called to Blaze.

He shoved his mask up to meet her gaze. “Somewhere up that way. Stick by me. I’ll take care of you.
